Amanda just posted a blog about the project http://blog.amandapalmer.net/post/392050312/the-whole-story-behind-evelyn-evelynI have to say that I, too, feel that they're taking this thing a bit too far. I just wish they could let the music do the talking without creating all these background stories. I mean... to have the "twins" tweet? Ugh. This project has started to annoy me.

i think that stuff makes it fun. everyone knows its fake and that's what makes it ridiculous (in a good way). at first i also thought that having a bunch of celebrity singers on one song on an incredibly obscure/bizarre/very non commercial album was another awesome ridiculous point to it. but all this attention it seems to be getting is ridiculous in the bad way... what i loved about the ep is it was allowed to be a a kind of stupid/awesome/just fun and (good way) ridiculous thing. i just hope the album doesn't take the concept to a serious place. i mean that could work out to be awesome maybe, but i dunno...

I sincerely hope that this storm cloud hovering over the Evelyn Evelyn project subsides. I certainly understand that this might be perceived as offensive by some individuals, however, coming from Jason and Amanda I am absolutely confident that this was never the intention. I believe Jason and Amanda consistently produce layered art (not just a song, but a story or some self exploration, or some keen observation and commentary on our world). These are two of the most intelligent artists I am aware of. I think they often mean to be provocative, to start a discussion, but I do not believe they ever intend to offend.

I've certainly been surprised by the fuss this project has caused recently. While I may not be the biggest fan of Evelyn Evelyn I never considered them offensive. I simply found this project more fun when we didn't have all this information. Obviously, it's nice to have some sort of background story. I mean, a graphic novel or whatever, is probably gonna be a nice addition. But like somebody mentioned on the Shadowbox, I always felt that there was an anachronistic feel to this project, and I think that's part of the reason why I don't like silly tweets. Way too modern. Plus, I'm in the camp that finds the child pornography thing a bit too grim. Of course art is allowed to explore dark subjects but for me that was crossing a line.

I keep changing my mind about this project every two seconds. The one thing this fuss has managed to convince me of is that I really want to hear the record. I think "A Campaign of Shock and Awe" sounds promising. I guess all those things that Amanda mentioned in her blog are going to make sense in the context of the album. So yeah, how about that preorder? (Eh... apparently I always need to complain about something. Why does the album have to include the Joy Division cover? I mean, sure, it sounds "appropriate" for this conjoined twins business but it's been done so many times. Kinda like covering "Hallelujah". So boring.)

Jason & E&E put up a new tune on their respective myspaces. Very mellow, darkly eery and slightly serious, in my opinion. I love it thoroughly.
What do you guys think?

I'm just coming across the new track now, but if the rest of the album sounds like this, I'll recant my initial reaction of being completely against the project. This is lovely.
On another note, since I know that a number of us weren't at all keen on the Elephant Elephant release, who else is still ordering the full-length despite that?
I was discussing this with someone yesterday and saying that even though I wasn't sure I'd like it, I'd ordered the vinyl/CD combination to support Jason as an artist. I know, too, that we're all kind of in the same boat with that here, but if Jason started making music in a direction that you weren't at all fond of, would you still buy it to support him?
Or, more specifically, if you're like me and didn't like the initial release, will you be buying this one all the same?

It's a pretty simple concept really, buy what you like and don't buy what you don't. Jason's my 2nd favorite singer-songwriter probably ever (behind Dylan) and I enjoy all of his albums immensely. But if he put out something I happened not to enjoy, I'd likely not purchase it. Dylan has a few miserable albums and I don't own those. I know Jason needs our support more than Dylan, I was just making a comparison based on a personal level.
That being said, I preordered the E&E album as soon as the option was available. There's a few tracks that seem iffy to me (Chicken Man...) but for the most part I feel it sounds pretty solid! And the title track is just phenomenal in my opinion. I listen to it on his myspace at least once a day!
